Leigh: Hi, Lauren.  Thanks for interviewing me about the forthcoming book.  I’m very chuffed to be selected as Author of the Month, by the way.

Lauren: Tell us a bit about you Leigh.

Leigh: You say you would like to know a little about me. Well, where shall we start? I was brought up in the Manchester area in the seventies, really, which makes me “mature” now, somewhere in my forties, I’m not telling you exactly. I’m wearing well, though, touch wood.

I went to a northern university in the eighties, where I studied psychology, which was interesting enough, and a good way to get away from home. It was around the end of this time that I started writing, I’ve still got a box full of what is most probably rubbish which I must sort through one day. I got a good few rejection letters from the likes of Punch magazine; I think my missives were a little too feisty for them, not humorous enough probably. But of course you think you know it all at that age, don’t you?

In the end I drifted down to Brighton with a boyfriend, ended up doing a bit of modelling and various agency jobs to pay the rent. I saw life, shall we say. In the end I got into the advertising industry, became a bit of a career girl I suppose, and these days I’ve got quite a good position. Don’t really want to reveal my current writing interests to the folks in the boardroom though!

I’ve had many a dalliance along the way, with blokes from all walks of life, but I finally got actually married (gulp) five years ago.  He’s really a great fellow, if a bit bonkers at times, but that’s what you want in a bloke isn’t it? Someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

Anyway, enough of all that slush. Suffice to say, I found myself with a bit of spare time and decided to have a go at fiction, but, unlike in my younger days, to target it a bit more effectively, hence the choice of erotica.  In fact, once I started on the idea, I found it flowed really well, and of course it’s tremendously rewarding to get a work of pure imagination published.

Lauren: Your new book, Students of Submission is out now, what can we expect?

Leigh: Yes, the book.  Well, it’s about a girl called Sally, funnily enough studying psychology at a northern university, which I suppose is a bit of a reflection of me in my younger days. The similarity ends pretty quickly though, because she rapidly finds herself in a situation where she and several of her contemporaries are gathered in a luxurious country mansion, in which they participate in a sort of psycho-sexual experiment, studied by the owners, Jane and her husband, and various staff. I thought of it as being a bit like “The Apprentice” without many clothes or inhibitions. The participants are nicer though, mostly!

The plot does unfold gradually, I feel, enough to keep the reader wondering. Of course the scenario is far-fetched, but most sexual encounters in the real world are perhaps less interesting than those in which the reader can indulge absolutely, sort of immerse themselves in a realm which is theoretically feasible, but fantastic enough to transport them from every day cares.

Does that make sense?  I’m going on a bit. Anyway, I do strongly believe in writing a story which is hopefully exciting, and which actually has a sort of positive message about erotic enjoyment.  Nobody in the novel gets treated in a cruel way, more than they wish to be, and even though there is quite a bit of bondage, spanking and suchlike, it is more about the mental side of submission and domination. The pleasure of anticipation, and so on. But there is plenty of activity, don’t worry!
