Out of the Storm

By | April 30, 2014

It is 1922, four years after the end of the Great War. When Miriam Dewhurst accepts a teaching position at Blackdown Hall, an isolated boarding school on the edge of Dartmoor, she is not put off by the stories of silent pupils, intimidated schoolteachers and a nameless, menacing man. She soon realises some of the rumours are true: the children seem cowed, the school is bleak and silent, and, most curious of all, despite it being denied, she suspects there is indeed a man living there – a man who shuts himself away, a man who is quick to temper. When Miriam finally meets the mysterious and tormented Captain Ravensby she finds that, far from being terrified, she is enthralled. He too is intrigued by her, but will he be able to let go of the horrors of his past? Can Miriam breathe new life into Blackdown Hall – and into him?
